Why is LodgeiT blocking the lodgment?
LodgeiT may prevent lodgment when a business loss is being used to reduce other assessable income without meeting the ATO’s requirements.
For example, a client has employment income and a business loss under their ABN. They want to deduct the business loss from their employment income to reduce their taxable income. However, the ATO generally requires non-commercial business losses to be deferred unless the relevant conditions are satisfied.
Important: Earning less than $20,000 in business income does not automatically mean the loss must be deferred. The $20,000 income test is one of the criteria, and other tests and exceptions may apply.
How to resolve the issue
Review the client’s business income, expenses and reported loss.
Check whether the business meets the ATO’s non-commercial loss tests or qualifies for an exception.
If the loss cannot be claimed in the current financial year, defer it and carry it forward in accordance with the ATO rules.
Review the tax return and validate it again in LodgeiT before attempting lodgment.
