Should I be adding a client via the tax portal (or the new online services) before adding into LodgeiT? I'm not really clear on how the SBR interaction functions for that.

You have to Connect LodgeiT to ATO, all SBR interactions hinge on selecting LodgeiT as your preferred SBR Partner through ATO Access Manager.
